The End of 6th Grade

Well students, the last day of school is in two days. I can hardly believe how quickly the time has gone by this school year. I will miss each and every one of you, but I am excited for you to begin your next step in education: Jr. High!

Please remember to give everyone respect; we are all worth something.

Extra Credit

Just a reminder, you cannot earn extra credit if you have missing work.

Completion of extra credit may earn you a half-letter grade improvement if completed correctly and to the best of your abilities.

You will need the corresponding guide to each linked activity below:

Language Arts - Utah Compose Essay

This year, we have studied humans from prehistoric times through The Middle Ages. We studied royal governments being overturned by people who wanted to be treated better. We read about Matteo Alacran faced with treating seeking fair treatment of everyone in at the Alacran Estate. We read about Habo who felt that his family would be better off without him. We have read about humans treated differently for various reasons.

For this Language Arts extra credit essay, write five paragraphs answering the following questions: What does determine the way people are treated in society today? (there might be multiple reasons) Do you agree with the way people are valued today? What would you change? How should people be treated? Should people with more money or education receive better treatment? Which people should not receive fair treatment?

Use examples from what you have learned in class or other current issues happening today to support your answers.

21st-Century Literacy Skills

Last week we read about using Minecraft in the classroom. Some teachers are incorporating the creation of Language Arts or Social Studies topics in the virtually gaming world. Students used the article in our Science World Magazine and the blog post shared at the following link:

http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2015/02/teaching-in-the-age-of-minecraft/385231/

It's important for students to be able to read about current trends and topics. Not only should students learn to read from textbooks, but they should be reading from magazines, blogs, and other webpages. Being literate the the 21st-Century looks much different than literacy in the past. Do you think that technology plays a role in literacy? (Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write)

Trista and Izzy: "After reading the 2 articles we came to a final decision that minecraft should be used in class. It should depend on the day and occasion in class yet we think that less than an hour is plenty!"

Lila and Keely: "We think that it is a great idea, but as long as it is for education. We also think that it needs to involve what they are learning about."

Logan and Eli: "Video games can be fun, but you don't want to play too much because then you would get distracted from school."

Gavin and Ben: "The stories explain that it can teach engineering, and in one story they built the Alamo!"

For three extra-credit points in Language Arts, comment below about what it means to be "literate in the 21st-Century."

WWII Book Clubs

We had a great time in our book clubs during April. We read four powerful and entertaining stories about children the same age as our 6th graders. Click the titles below to view the presentations that each group created based on their book!

Thanks to all the parents who helped direct our book clubs. Thank you students for working hard in your groups!

Haiti

I will be out of town from Friday, April 10th-Friday, April 17th and will be back in class on Monday, April 20th. I'm excited to venture to Haiti for my first with the Haiti Health Initiative (click to read about this great cause). I will miss our class, but I am so thrilled that our class is working hard to help raise money for Guivenson, a 14-year-old Haitian in need of a critical heart surgery.

Guivenson and his Parents in Timo, Haiti

It's wonderful that our students have taken interest in participating in my trip to Haiti! I can't wait to come and report back about my experiences.
